JFK creating the Peace Corps |
Join the Peace Corps now!
(just kidding!)
I've contacted the Peace Corps both in Washington DC (the China and Asia Field Director) and also in Kathmandu (Andrea), where the Peace Corps is setting up headquarters once again after six years absence because of the Maoist violence; Peace Corps volunteers will be re-entering Nepal this September, 2012, and I believe they will be coordinating with US AID (which was present in Nepal when I was there).
Both were very friendly and welcoming! This is a good sign, since I hope to reconnect somehow with the Peace Corps, though in what capacity is a little unclear to me. At the least, I can present to interested students at Buckley on the annual Peace Corps Day.
I now realize that have several strands of interest in going back: Nepal, the Peace Corps, the villagers and students I knew, connecting Buckley, finding the origins of my long career as a professional educator, and my own nostalgic journey to where I was on a great adventure in my twenties. I'm not sure which of these various strands will prove to be the most significant in the end. Stay tuned!
