Beijing was an amazing place, vast, barely navigable, so many people from so many parts of the country, a country of great contrasts, of ancient and European modern. Four days I was the consummate tourist, walking for hours in the rain, negotiating with non-English speaking taxi drivers, getting a feel for how far urban sprawl can stretch. The national bird? The (construction) crane! I counted 30 multistory cranes building apartment buildings near the airport.  Welding goes on all night in construction zones. This city never sleeps, is always moving and growing. My visit was intense and interesting.
