Driving to Cork

Yesterday was tops for driving on the wrong side of the road, more than ten hours to Cork in the Southwest and then on to wade in the ocean and see the bird sanctuary. Garmin Nav/Sat GPS has a lovely Irish female voice that's not as judgemental (Brit spelling has an 'e' but thank you for the suggestions, Herr Spellcheck). As the rental car agent said, "You don't feel as bad about making a wrong turn." I made plenty of those all day, especially when I took the second instead of the third exit from each roundabout. (It's a lot to ask.)

We saw churches, castles, cows, Cork, and very small villages with roads so narrow that one Suzuki Sprint could barely get through let alone two, with oncoming traffic. I've seen bike lanes more generous! My wife folded in the passenger side mirror (remember it's on the left) so it wouldn't strike the hedges so often. Better that than nicking mirrors of oncoming tractors.

The weather was glorious along the coast and in the tiny villages. Once again, ate yogurt and cheese, which Wexford and Cork are apparently famous for. Glad to be back in Dublin with a smaller agenda, like sightseeing and Powerscourt Estate out in the suburbs.

Tomorrow I fly to Dusseldorf then a train to Hannover to see my sister who's been living there. Part II of a fabulous vacation!

  1. Oh for the e in judgemental! Something about the phrase 'oncoming tractors' makes me smile, too. As you can see, I'm catching up on your blog in order - excited to read what you have to say about Hannover and Berlin, and see where you end up going with your magic DB train pass.
